Smoked Cherry Whiskey Sour with Charred Lemon

Smoked Cherry Whiskey Sour with Charred Lemon

Char a lemon half cut-side down on a hot grill until blackened and fragrant; squeeze for 3/4 oz juice.

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey
  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • 1/2 oz cherry preserves or syrup
  • 1 egg white (optional, for foam)
  • 1 lemon half, for charring
  • 2 brandied cherries, to garnish
  • Ice cubes
  • 1 sprig rosemary, lightly torched (optional)

Instructions

  1. Char a lemon half cut-side down on a hot grill until blackened and fragrant; squeeze for 3/4 oz juice.
  2. Add the bourbon, charred lemon juice, simple syrup, cherry preserves and egg white (if using) to a shaker.
  3. Dry-shake without ice for 15 seconds to build a foam.
  4. Add ice and shake hard again until well chilled.
  5. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
  6. Garnish with brandied cherries and, for a smoky aroma, a lightly torched rosemary sprig.
  7. The whiskey sour dates to the 1860s, balancing bourbon's warmth with bright citrus. Charring the lemon over the grill borrows the smoke of the cookout itself, and a spoonful of cherry rounds it into a deep, ruby-hued sipper - a fitting toast for Father's Day. Please enjoy responsibly.
