Classic British Gin Gimlet: The Two-Ingredient Lime Cocktail for Easy Weeknights

Chill a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5 minutes while you gather the ingredients.

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces (60ml) London dry gin
  • 3/4 ounce (22ml) fresh lime juice
  • 3/4 ounce (22ml) lime cordial or simple syrup (or 1 1/2 ounces Rose's lime cordial for the classic version)
  • Ice cubes
  • 1 thin lime wheel, for garnish
  • Batch for 4: 1 cup gin, 6 tablespoons lime juice, 6 tablespoons cordial, kept in the fridge

Instructions

  1. Chill a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5 minutes while you gather the ingredients.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker two-thirds full with ice.
  3. Add the gin, lime juice and lime cordial.
  4. Shake hard for 12 to 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosted.
  5. Double-strain into the chilled glass to catch any ice shards.
  6. Float a lime wheel on top and serve immediately. For the true two-ingredient original, use gin and Rose's lime cordial only, in a 2:1 ratio.
  7. For a weeknight batch, mix the gin, juice and cordial in a jar and refrigerate for up to 3 days; shake individual pours with ice as needed.
  8. The gimlet began as medicine. In the 19th century, the Royal Navy issued lime juice to sailors to prevent scurvy, and Lauchlin Rose's patented lime cordial of 1867 made it easy to preserve. Legend credits Surgeon Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Gimlette with mixing the cordial into the officers' gin ration to make it palatable, though the name may equally come from the small tool used to tap a barrel. Raymond Chandler immortalized the drink in The Long Goodbye, insisting a real gimlet is 'half gin and half Rose's lime juice and nothing else.' Modern bartenders lighten it with fresh juice, but the appeal is unchanged: two bottles, one glass, and a drink that takes less time than boiling pasta.
