Classic Cuba Libre: The Three-Ingredient Rum, Cola and Lime Drink for Easy Weeknights

Fill a highball glass to the top with ice.

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 2 oz white or light gold rum
  • 4 to 5 oz cold cola (cane-sugar cola if you can find it)
  • 1/2 lime
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wedge for garnish

Instructions

  1. Fill a highball glass to the top with ice.
  2. Squeeze the half lime directly into the glass, then drop the spent shell in.
  3. Pour in the rum.
  4. Top with cold cola, pouring slowly down the side so it keeps its fizz.
  5. Stir once gently with a bar spoon.
  6. Garnish with a fresh lime wedge and serve right away.
  7. For a batch, mix 1 part rum to 2 1/2 parts cola in a pitcher and add the lime juice just before serving so it stays bright.
  8. The Cuba Libre dates to around 1900 in Havana, when cola arrived on the island and the toast 'Por Cuba libre!' gave the drink its name. The lime is what separates it from a plain rum and cola, and three ingredients make it an easy end to a busy school-week evening.
