Witches' Brew Halloween Punch: Lime Sherbet, Pineapple Juice and Ginger Ale for a Crowd

Witches' Brew Halloween Punch: Lime Sherbet, Pineapple Juice and Ginger Ale for a Crowd

Chill all the liquids and the punch bowl for at least an hour before the party so the punch stays frothy and cold.

Serves 12

Ingredients

  • 1 quart (about 1 liter) lime sherbet
  • 4 cups (1 liter) pineapple juice, chilled
  • 4 cups (1 liter) ginger ale, chilled
  • 2 cups (480 ml) lemon-lime soda, chilled
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) fresh lime juice
  • 1 lime, thinly sliced
  • Green food coloring, a few drops (optional)
  • Gummy worms, for garnish
  • Food-grade dry ice, for fog (optional, see note)

Instructions

  1. Chill all the liquids and the punch bowl for at least an hour before the party so the punch stays frothy and cold.
  2. Pour the pineapple juice and lime juice into the punch bowl. Stir in a few drops of green food coloring if you want a more vivid witchy green.
  3. Slowly add the ginger ale and lemon-lime soda, pouring down the side of the bowl to keep the fizz.
  4. Scoop the lime sherbet into the bowl in generous balls. It will float and foam as it slowly melts, turning the punch creamy and cloudy like a cauldron.
  5. Float the lime slices on top and hang gummy worms over the rim of the bowl and the glasses.
  6. For a bubbling cauldron effect, drop a few small pieces of food-grade dry ice into the bowl using tongs just before guests arrive. Never touch dry ice with bare hands and never let it go into a glass.
  7. Ladle into cups, making sure each one gets a little sherbet foam, and serve immediately. Top up with more soda as the party goes on.
  8. Sherbet punch is a classic of American church halls, baby showers and school parties, where the floating scoops and the foamy head make it feel like a celebration with almost no effort. Tinted green and dressed with worms and fog, it becomes the witches' brew every Halloween party needs, and because it is alcohol free it works for trick-or-treaters and grown-ups alike. Keep an extra bottle of ginger ale on hand to refresh the fizz.
