If smoking the drink, trap a puff of wood smoke under an inverted rocks glass for 30 seconds, then turn it upright to hold the aroma.
Serves 1
Ingredients
- 2 oz bourbon whiskey
- 1 tsp pure maple syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash orange bitters
- 1 large ice cube
- 1 strip orange peel, charred
- 1 brandied cherry, to garnish
- Optional: wood smoke from a smoking gun or torched cinnamon stick
Instructions
- If smoking the drink, trap a puff of wood smoke under an inverted rocks glass for 30 seconds, then turn it upright to hold the aroma.
- Add the maple syrup, Angostura bitters and orange bitters to the glass.
- Pour in the bourbon and stir briefly to combine.
- Add one large clear ice cube and stir gently for 20-30 seconds to chill and lightly dilute.
- Hold the orange peel over a flame for a few seconds until it just chars and the oils blister, then twist it over the surface to express the oils and drop it in.
- Garnish with a brandied cherry.
- Serve straight away, ideally with the first sip taken through the lingering wisp of smoke.
- The Old Fashioned is the original cocktail — spirit, sugar, bitters and ice, first defined in the early 1800s and unchanged in spirit ever since. Swapping refined sugar for maple syrup and finishing with charred orange and a curl of wood smoke gives this version a campfire warmth that nods to the grill, making it the quintessential whiskey drink to put in Dad's hand on Father's Day. Please enjoy responsibly.
